A Perspective on Code-Switching Practices among Bilingual Youth in Multicultural and Sociolinguistic Settings
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper examines code-switching practices among bilingual youths in multicultural and sociolinguistic settings, with a particular focus on the contemporary Philippine context. It explores how code-switching functions as a sophisticated communicative resource rather than a sign of linguistic deficiency. Through a synthesis of current literature, the paper analyzes the multifaceted roles of code-switching in academic discourse, interpersonal communication, identity construction, and digital interaction. The conceptual analysis reveals that bilingual youths strategically utilize code-switching to clarify complex concepts, enhance comprehension, and express emotions with greater precision while strengthening social solidarity. In classroom environments, code-switching serves as a cognitive scaffold that bridges linguistic gaps and promotes participation, particularly among learners developing second-language proficiency. This paper further theorizes that code-switching plays a crucial role in shaping hybrid identities, allowing bilingual youths to affirm their cultural roots while simultaneously navigating global linguistic practices. Social variables, including audience, topic, formality, and platform, significantly influence language choice, confirming that code-switching is both context-sensitive and pragmatically motivated. In digital and media spaces, these practices function as a social glue, fostering community building and emotional authenticity. While addressing the necessity of purposeful integration to ensure balanced language development, the paper advocates for inclusive, translanguaging-friendly policies. Such policies recognize bilingual students’ linguistic repertoires as essential assets for fostering communicative competence, cultural continuity, and academic growth in multicultural societies.
