Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic writing poses significant pedagogical and ethical dilemmas for higher education. This study consolidates international literature on the ramifications of AI tools – particularly generative models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Elicit – on aca-demic literacy, writing pedagogy, and student assistance. The investigation examines how AI facilitates several phases of writing, from inspiration to editing, and its impact on student involvement, instructor responsibilities, and institutional standards. Although AI technologies have transformative prospects to democratize access to academic discourse and assist bilingual or neurodivergent learners, they also pose risks of aggravating epistemic inequality, undermining critical thinking, and obscuring authorship boundaries. The research underscores the necessity of critical AI literacy and inclusive pedagogies, informed by conceptual frameworks and empirical facts, to equip students for a swiftly evolving writing ecosystem. It finishes by promoting instructional and institutional solutions that integrate ethical reasoning, transparency, and cognitive development in AI-assisted aca-demic writing.
